The m a n u a l t r a n sa xle should be in spect ed for oil
lea ks an d pr oper oil level when ot h er un der veh icle
ser vice is per for m ed. To in spect th e t r a n sa xle oil level,
posit ion the veh icle on a level su r fa ce. Rem ove fill plu g
(Fig. 1) from t h e t r a n sa xle side cover. Th e oil level
sh ou ld n ot be below 4 m m (3/16 in ) fr om bot t om of oil
fill open in g.

tenance. Th e oil sh ou ld be cha n ged only wh en wa t er
contamin a t ion is su spect ed. If oil h a s a foa m y or m ilky
appea r a n ce it pr oba bly is cont a m in ed. A cir cu la r mag-

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SHIFT MECHANISM

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE

lea ks and pr oper fluid level wh en ot h er u n der h ood
ser vice is per for m ed.
CAUTION: To minimize fluid contamination, verify
that dipstick is seated in the fill hole or tube after fluid
level reading is taken.
TO INSPECT THE TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL:
(1) P osit ion the veh icle on a level su r fa ce.
(2) St a r t en gin e a n d allow t o idle in PARK for a t
lea st 60 secon ds. Th e wa r m er th e t r a n sa xle fluid, t h e
more a ccu r a t e t h e r ea din g.
(3) Wh ile sittin g in dr iver seat , a pply br a kes a n d
place gea r select or in ea ch posit ion . Ret u r n gea r selec-
tor to pa r k.

Raise h ood an d rem ove t r a n sa xle flu id level in di-
cator (dipst ick) a n d wipe clea n wit h a su ita ble clot h .
(5) In st a ll dipst ick a n d ver ify it is seated in fill h ole
or tu be (F ig. 2 or 3).
CAUTION: Do not overfill automatic transaxle, leak-
age or damage can result.
(6) Remove dipst ick , wit h h a n dle a bove t ip, t a ke
flu id level r ea din g (F ig. 4). If t h e veh icle h a s been
dr iven for a t lea st 15 m in u t es before in spect in g flu id
level, t r a n sa xle ca n be con sider ed hot an d r ea din g
sh ou ld be above th e WARM m a r k. If veh icle ha s ru n for
less th a n 15 min u t es a n d more t h a n 60 secon ds
